Reflections from the Book of Genesis Chapter 5

Genesis chapter 5 gives us a list of names. However, they are no ordinary list of names. In my study of Genesis chapter 5, I have always wondered what is the meaning of these names written in careful order of their family line. I was utterly clueless of their significance until I came to study a commentary that explains the importance of the names in the culture of their day. The identity of a person is always traced from his bloodline, from the kind of family or tribe he belongs to.

However, Genesis 5 is not about the bloodline of those names. Although there was Noah as the main character. Why Noah was identified as the most important name? The last name is written is always considered bearing the heaviest significance in the list. And yes, Noah’s significance is very important because we see in the following chapters that Noah delivered his family (a symbol of humanity) from the judgment of the flood. He formed a saving act for God’s people. But, no matter how heroic Noah’s role was, the story of the genealogy is still never about him. Why?

Genealogies are written not to magnify any human in the story. Genealogies are actually a record not of names but God’s unbroken line of the history of redemption. It is an unbroken line of God’s covenant and promises to save humanity and restore man into its original loving relationship with God.

Isn’t is a lovely story.

Friends, knowing this gives me so much joy and thrill inside me that even the lists of names in the Bible that I thought are an only ordinary recording of bloodlines are message bearers of God’s unfailing love and plan to save humanity.

God’s promises are unfailing. They will stand until its fulfillment. God already fulfilled ONE GREATEST PROMISE—THE COMING OF OUR MESSIAH. JESUS CHRIST CAME TO FULFILL HIS PROMISE OF SALVATION that was played by Noah long long time ago.

In Jesus, it is not anymore about our story, and who we are—how good and how bad. When you place your faith and trust in Jesus, your storyline will be changed. YOU WILL HAVE JESUS’ BLOODLINE. God will see you through the works and righteousness of Jesus. It takes so much load out of our shoulders.

Friends for this reason that God preserved the bloodline of the Messiah, that our name will be changed, that we will have not the sinful bloodline but the BLOODLINE OF THE SAVED!

May you also find your way…

The genealogy is pointing us to the ONE who is the ONLY ONE WHO CAN CHANGE YOUR BLOODLINE! He is so excited to have you!
